Who is a candidate for scleral lenses?
Scleral Contact lenses are for patients who have visual disorders from corneal irregularity or ocular pain. These lenses are used to treat keratoconus, corneal trauma, corneal transplant complications, post-LASIK or RK surgery, dry eyes and much more. Scleral lenses can also be used to manage patients with compromised corneas. This includes, but not limited to, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, Graft Versus Host Disease, and neurotrophic keratitis.
What is involved in the fitting process?
The initial visit consists of a comprehensive refractive assessment, computerized corneal topography, scleral teach/fitting, and external photography with fluorescence staining. A detailed report including all of the parameters is sent to scleral manufacturers in order to begin created your unique lens. This could take up for 2-3 weeks including shipping time.
How are scleral lenses custom designed?
Dr. Patel uses a modern fitting technique that streamlines the process. Our 16 lens diagnostic fitting set is readily available at your first visit and are used on your eyes for initial determination of the most accurate measurements. This process is a very efficient way to produce you custom scleral lenses.
Does insurance provide coverage for scleral contact lenses?
Every insurance company is different. If there is medical necessity for us to fit you in a scleral lens, we will investigate your policy and go over your benefits. We also offer financing options through CareCredit.
