Women’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month!

April is known as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month.

According to the National Eye Institute, women have a greater chance of eye conditions because they tend to live longer than men. These vision issues include eye diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and/or dry eyes. Women are also more likely to go under medical treatments that can lead to greater visual fluctuations. Other reasons for how vision may change include long-term medications, pregnancy, hormonal factors, and systemic diseases (i.e. autoimmune disorders, diabetes, high blood pressure). Statistics show that out of 3.6 million Americans who are age 40 and above who suffer from visual impairment, 2.3 million are women.

Did You Know?

There are many ways women can protect their vision and eye health. The first, most important step is by scheduling an annual eye examination with Dr. Kumar Patel. He is able to detect any early stages of eye disease with the most current technology.

Protection and Prevention

Health eyes are vital for your future. Ocular changes can occur at such a slow rate. Implementing good habits now will pay off in the long run. A healthy diet is a great way to start towards protecting vision. A diet that is rich in lutein, zeaxanthin, and high-quality omega-3 fatty acids can prevent vision loss from eye diseases. Ways to prevent certain eye diseases include smoking cessation, wearing high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses, safely handling contact lenses, and learning of any family ocular disease.
